Legendary Bayern Munich goalkeeper Neuer's decision to come out of international retirement and be the team's No.1 at the tournament was the biggest pre-tournament news, meaning Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann, who had been first choice in recent months, is now back-up.

A calf injury had kept Neuer out of pre-World Cup friendlies against Finland and the USA, but the 40-year-old was back for the opening 7-1 win over Curaçao and has continued in the 2-1 downing of Côte d'Ivoire, as well as the 2-1 loss to Ecuador when already confirmed as group winners. He will therefore likely remain in goal unless that calf issue flares up again.
