Borussia Monchengladbach will push Nico Elvedi out the door this summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal at the club, providing Leeds United with a boost in their pursuit of the centre-back.
BILD report on the 29-year-old defender today and how questions remain about his future at Gladbach.
New contract or sale
The newspaper explains Nico Elvedi’s future at Gladbach needs to be resolved in the coming weeks. The German club are planning with him and even signing players to complement him in the team.
The plan is to have the position doubly covered, but that is provided Elvedi extends his current deal. That runs until 2027, so a decision needs to be made this summer.
If Elvedi has no interest in doing so, sporting director Rouven Schröder will likely ‘push for the Swiss player’s sale’. If he doesn’t, they risk losing out on the defender on a free transfer next summer.
That would work in Leeds United’s favour. They have been linked with a move for the defender since last month. He’s keen on a Premier League move and if that chance is there a renewal is unlikely.
Leeds United interest

Sport Witness covered a report on their interest on the 20th of June. That report explained that Daniel Farke was keen on reuniting with the Switzerland international this summer.
A follow up report a week later explained that they had seen an €8.5m offer rejected by the German club. That was a verbal offer but deemed too little by Gladbach’s hierarchy. It also claimed, though, that it was almost certain that Elvedi would not be extending his deal at the club.
That left them in a tricky position as a free exit next summer would be a transfer disaster. The club have lost players in the past on free transfers and don’t wish to do so again.
Now the decision appears to have been made. If Elvedi makes it clear he won’t sign, he will be sold. Leeds United may be able to play on that to get their man as they seek a replacement for Pascal Struijk.
