July 3 – UEFA has rejected one of the World Cup’s most controversial refereeing directives, deciding against introducing automatic red cards for players who cover their mouths during confrontations with opponents.
Instead, Europe’s governing body has instructed referees to caution players for attempting to conceal communication as an act of unsporting behaviour, while reserving the right to pursue disciplinary action after matches where appropriate.
