July 2 – In the wake of Saudi Arabia’s exit from the 2026 World Cup, the country’s football federation (SAFF) President Yasser Al-Misehal has resigned from his post. 

The Green Falcons finished bottom of Group H with two points. They drew with Uruguay and Cape Verde but lost to Spain.  

“The national team’s failure to qualify for the next round of the World Cup is a result that falls short of all our ambitions,” Al-Misehal wrote on social media. “I bear full responsibility for it, apologising to everyone who hoped to see our team in a better position. 

“Based on my conviction that responsibility requires providing the opportunity for a new phase, I have decided not to continue until the end of the current term.” 

Al-Misehal served as SAFF President for seven years. He played a role in bringing the World Cup to Saudi Arabia and largely reflected his government’s position, promoting Saudi football and the women’s game. In interactions with the media, however, he often lacked transparency.  

He also sits on the FIFA Council, the world governing highest-decision making body which has become a rubber-stamping instrument for Gianni Infantino and his agenda. Al-Misehal’s exit from SAFF does not prevent him from remaining on the FIFA Council.
