Ruben Amorim has finally spoken publicly about his Manchester United spell after being unveiled as Milan’s new manager. The Portuguese coach made it clear he has no regrets about taking charge at Old Trafford.

Amorim was confirmed as Milan boss a few weeks ago, bringing an end to months of speculation following his departure from Manchester United in January.

Since then, he had largely stayed away from the spotlight, despite being linked with Benfica and a possible Premier League return with Fulham before eventually choosing San Siro.

Now, during his official presentation, the 41-year-old has addressed his time in England directly for the first time. O Jogo relayed his comments in Portugal.

“I’m proud to have managed Manchester United”

Asked what lessons he had taken from his difficult spell at Old Trafford, Amorim admitted mistakes were made but insisted the experience ultimately made him a better coach.

“The first thing is that it’s difficult to explain the mistakes; I’d have to explain the whole context,” he said.

“I learned, and I learned a lot. I made mistakes, but I’m proud to have managed Manchester United. Now, though, that’s part of the past.

“There are many things I can do better today; I’ve gained experience. I think everyone learns from their own experiences. There are things I’d like to change and others that never change. I’m certain I’m a better coach today.”

At least rather than distancing himself from the experience, Amorim described it as an important stage in his development.

Ruben Amorim was also asked how he wants Milan to play following the departure of Massimiliano Allegri.

“I have enormous respect for Allegri, who has huge experience. I don’t want to talk about the past, but I can explain my idea of football.”

“We have to dominate our opponents and defend well. Every coach has his own ideas. But I also have to adapt a little myself. Once I know the players better, I’ll adjust some of my ideas.”

“I want the team to entertain. I want the supporters to enjoy themselves and watch attractive football.”

“It takes time for everything to start working. But when you want to win, you take responsibility, and managing a big club brings exactly those responsibilities.”

“It only takes a drop in energy or concentration to lose. We want to win and dominate matches.”

No rush into the transfer market

Amorim also suggested Milan may not need a major overhaul before the new season.

“There are players who weren’t here last season. Chukwueze will stay with us; we need players who can win one-against-one duels. Saelemaekers can play on the left or the right and also enjoys those situations. Cissè and Comotto will begin working with us, and then we’ll see what happens.

“We’re going to discover players who didn’t have opportunities last season. If they play well and understand my ideas, we’ll find space for them.”

“Before looking for solutions outside the club, we should look carefully at what we already have. After pre-season we’ll make decisions, always keeping the budget in mind. The owner is here… We’ll assess the young players.”

After months of uncertainty following his Manchester United exit, Amorim has now fully turned the page.

He has learned from Old Trafford, remains proud of having managed one of the world’s biggest clubs, and believes those experiences have made him a stronger coach as he begins a new chapter with Milan.
