Free agent Samuel Abifade has left the door open to a possible move to Sheffield Wednesday this summer, after being asked if he’s joining the Owls.
Braunschweiger Zeitung have an interview with the 26-year-old, who is on the hunt for a new club after leaving 3. Liga side SV Waldhof Mannheim.
Sheffield Wednesday reunion?
The left-back has spent his entire career in Germany to date, starting out at FT Braunschweig Youth before moving in to their first team in 2018. A loan deal followed before he then joined Wolfsburg II in 2019.
Various free transfers have followed since, with moves to VFB Lubeck, SV Meppen and Manheim, who he joined in 2023.
He spent three years at the club making 97 appearances in total, scoring ten goals and assisting six during his time with them. But this summer has seen his contract come to an end, and he’s now on the hunt for a new home.
One potential destination could be Sheffield Wednesday. They’re now managed by Henrik Pederson, who had him during his own spell in charge at Eintracht Braunschweig. Samuel Abifade never made an appearance under him, though.
But that didn’t stop Braunschweiger Zeitung asking the question. Could there be a reunion at Sheffield Wednesday this summer? “You never know,” was Abifade’s response.
European dream
He’s very much open to a move abroad this summer. In fact, it’s something he’s been thinking about for a while.
“I’ve wanted to have this experience for a while now – to experience a new country and learn a new language,” he added, although the newspaper insists that he has ‘no specific destination in mind’.
He could have stayed where he was but insists the drive to do something new made him head in a different direction.
“I received an offer from Waldhof relatively early in the season,” he concluded.
“But I wanted to finish the season first and then make a decision. Thanks to the good season, I now want to seize the opportunity and try something new.”
