Wolves continue to resist permanent offers for Enso Gonzalez, despite interest arriving from several countries, and fresh comments from the player’s representative help explain why.
Speaking to ABC Deportes, Pedro Aldave revealed that a club from the Dutch top flight recently approached Wolves about taking Gonzalez on loan. The move failed to progress because the Championship club refused to include a purchase option.
“We had a proposal from the Netherlands for a loan,” Aldave said. “They don’t want to include an option to buy. He has two years left on his contract and they want to recover the player.”
That approach fits the picture that has emerged throughout the first semester. Wolves have also seen clubs from Spain, Turkey, Brazil and MLS monitor Gonzalez’s situation, but they have consistently tried to retain control of the 21-year-old’s future rather than open the door to a permanent exit.
Wolves still believe in the winger
Aldave admitted that Wolves’ confidence in Gonzalez has actually made negotiations more complicated.
“The club wants him, but they prefer him to get rhythm somewhere else,” he explained. “If they didn’t want him, everything would be much easier.”
The representative pointed to the winger’s difficult recent years. Gonzalez spent almost 18 months without regular football after a series of injury setbacks.
He impressed with Paraguay at the U20 World Cup, but further physical problems prevented him from building momentum afterwards.
Rather than viewing him as a player to move on, Wolves still see him as someone capable of contributing once he regains his rhythm.
“They know him, they watch him train and they know he’s an important player,” Aldave said. “They know what he went through trying to get fit, whether because of injuries or other reasons, and they want to recover him.”
Finding the right loan
Aldave also confirmed that Netherlands is not the only market explored. Interest has arrived from Brazil, while opportunities have also emerged elsewhere, including outside the top flight. Even so, Wolves have drawn a clear line.
“They won’t send him somewhere without the competitiveness needed for him to return to Wolverhampton and play at their level,” Aldave explained. “We’re trying to solve that situation.”
For now, Gonzalez continues his pre-season with Wolves while his representatives work on the next step. Finding a club willing to accept a straight loan without a purchase option remains the biggest challenge.
The stance also reflects Wolves’ original investment. They paid around €5m (£4.3m) to sign Gonzalez from Libertad as a teenager and still believe they can recover both the player and his value.
A temporary move remains the preferred solution, but only if it offers the level of competition they believe he needs before returning to Molineux.
