Aston Villa’s move for Wolves midfielder João Gomes is set to become even more lucrative for the Brazilian. It will be more lucrative than the transfer he had lined up with Atlético Madrid.

Brazilian journalist Felipe Silva reports the midfielder will earn a higher salary at Villa Park than he would have received in Spain. His signing-on bonus is also set to exceed the package previously agreed with Atlético Madrid.

Those details help explain why Aston Villa ultimately secured João Gomes after his proposed move to Atlético collapsed. Also, Manchester United and Liverpool both made enquiries over the Brazilian.

Better financial package

João Gomes had been expected to join Atlético Madrid before that transfer unravelled following the dispute involving agent Jorge Mendes and Bernardo Silva.

Once the Spain move fell through, Manchester United and Liverpool both contacted Wolves to explore a deal.

However, Aston Villa moved decisively and are now expected to sign the midfielder for £38m (€44m).

According to Felipe Silva, the personal terms offered by Villa proved even more attractive than those previously negotiated with Atlético Madrid. Both the player’s salary and signing-on fee increased.

While financial terms are rarely the only factor in a transfer, the improved package appears to have strengthened Aston Villa’s position as they pushed to complete the deal.

Flamengo also set for windfall

The transfer will also benefit João Gomes’ former club. ESPN Brazil reports Flamengo are entitled to 14% of the transfer fee agreed between Wolves and Aston Villa.

With the fixed fee standing at €40m (£34.5m), the Brazilian club are set to receive €5.6m (£4.8m). That figure is capable of rising if performance-related bonuses are triggered.

Flamengo had already collected €18.7m from João Gomes’ original move to Wolves in January 2023. So the midfielder’s transfer to Aston Villa will generate another significant financial return for his formative club.
