Brighton defender Igor Julio has returned for pre-season after a summer that looked likely to take him away from the Amex, but the Brazilian says his immediate focus is simply getting back on the pitch after the most difficult campaign of his career.
The 28-year-old came close to leaving Brighton in recent weeks. Cruzeiro pushed hard to bring him back to Brazil before talks collapsed, while Schalke were also unable to complete a move. With no agreement reached, Igor Julio has rejoined Fabian Hürzeler’s squad ahead of the new season.
Speaking to Lance!, the centre-back reflected on the challenges of last season and explained why he believes it has ultimately left him in a stronger position.
Stronger after a difficult campaign
Igor Julio admitted the previous season was complicated for several reasons, but insisted it also became an important turning point.
“It was a difficult season for me for several reasons, but it was also the season that strengthened me the most mentally and the one in which I prepared myself the most physically and psychologically.”
The defender explained that he used the summer break to make sure every physical issue was behind him before returning to Brighton.
“I tried to get rid of every type of pain or discomfort during the holidays and be 100% ready for pre-season. I already feel very good physically and I’m ready to compete again.”
“Here or somewhere else”
Despite reporting back to Brighton, Igor Julio made it clear that regular football remains his biggest priority.
“To be honest, right now I only think about being physically well and being ready for any opportunity that may come my way.”
He then acknowledged that his future is still open.
“I’m a Brighton player. I want to have a great season, whether that’s here or somewhere else.”
“I just want to play again, compete and be happy. Hopefully that happens this season.”
After a season dominated by injuries and uncertainty over his future, Igor Julio repeatedly returned to one theme throughout the interview – simply enjoying football again. Regular minutes, rather than transfer speculation, are now his priority.
Brazil dream still alive
Igor Julio also spoke about his ambition of representing Brazil, admitting it remains one of the biggest goals of his career despite never receiving a senior call-up.
“I think every player dreams of playing for the national team. I’m no different.”
At 28, though, the Brighton defender believes there is only one route into Carlo Ancelotti’s plans – playing regularly again after an injury-hit season.
“I only think about playing, having the opportunity to develop and reach my best level. The rest will come with time, if it’s God’s will.”
The interview also offered an insight into how he sees his development since arriving in England. Igor Julio believes Serie A taught him almost everything he knows about defending, while the Premier League has forced him to play and react much more quickly because of the pace of the game.
Away from the pitch, he explained that Brighton’s youthful squad creates an environment where experienced players have a responsibility to help new arrivals settle in, while also learning from the younger generation themselves.
So whether his next opportunity comes at Brighton or elsewhere, Igor Julio’s priority is getting back on the pitch and enjoying football again after a frustrating year.
