Tottenham could already be facing a major decision over Souza’s future. Reports from Brazil claim Benfica have submitted a €20m (£17.4m) offer for the left-back. This comes just six months after his arrival in North London.

The claim comes from Santos insider outlet Diário do Peixe, which reports the Portuguese club have made an offer. In addition, Spurs are currently evaluating the proposal.

If the figures are accurate, Tottenham would stand to make a quick profit on a player they signed from Santos in January for around €15m (£13m). Souza put pen to paper on a five-year contract. He joined after emerging as one of the Brazilian club’s brightest academy products.

The report also explains that Santos are watching developments closely. Thanks to a 10% sell-on clause based on the profit from any future transfer, plus FIFA solidarity payments, the Brazilian side could receive around €1.2m (£1m) if Benfica complete the move.

Reputation intact

The reported bid arrives during a period in which Souza’s reputation has continued to rise. This is despite his limited first-team opportunities at Tottenham.

The 20-year-old has been nominated for this year’s Golden Boy award, recognising Europe’s best young players. He has already made four Premier League appearances since arriving in England.

Before joining Spurs, he attracted interest from several European clubs. Diário do Peixe says Barcelona, Bayern Munich and clubs from the Netherlands had all monitored his development while he was at Santos.

But it’s fair to note that Souza did not travel with Tottenham for the first stage of the club’s pre-season tour in New Zealand, where Roberto De Zerbi’s side are currently preparing for the new campaign.

Future still uncertain

The latest claims from Brazil come just days after reports that Souza had also started attracting attention elsewhere.

Earlier this month, Argentine journalist Uriel Iugt reported that several Premier League clubs had made enquiries over a possible loan move for the youngster. However, he added that Tottenham had no intention of allowing Souza to leave at that stage.

Meanwhile, we covered claims that Souza has also entered the thinking of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil staff . They are beginning to plan for the 2030 World Cup cycle.

According to that report, the Tottenham youngster is viewed as one of the long-term options at left-back after impressing both at Santos and during the early stages of his time in England.

Whether Tottenham are genuinely considering Benfica’s reported offer remains to be seen. What is clear is that Souza’s stock continues to rise, even though his role at Spurs is still being defined only months after his arrival.
