Newcastle United remain in the picture for the signing of Danilo Santos. Fresh reports from Brazil claim influential agents are working behind the scenes. They are trying to engineer the Botafogo midfielder’s return to the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has been linked with the Magpies throughout the summer. Despite interest from elsewhere, the latest claims once again point towards St James’ Park. It would be the most obvious destination if Bruno Guimarães leaves.
Agents trying to pave the way
According to RTI Esporte, super-agent Kia Joorabchian has promised Danilo’s representative Giuliano Bertolucci. He will help secure the midfielder a move back to England.
The report claims the pair are working together to find the Botafogo star a club in the Premier League. And Newcastle is viewed as the leading possibility.
That scenario remains closely tied to Bruno Guimarães’ future. Should Arsenal eventually prise the Brazil international away from Newcastle, Danilo Santos is again being presented as one of the players capable of filling the vacancy in Eddie Howe’s midfield. And he is keen on the move.
Botafogo willing to wait
Botafogo, however, are in no rush. RTI Esporte says the club continue to value Danilo Santos at around €40m (£34.5m) and have no intention of lowering their demands. That claim puts the reported €20m (£17.3m) release clause in check.
The report also claims new owners GDA Luma would actually prefer to keep the midfielder unless a club is willing to meet Botafogo’s valuation.
With fresh investment strengthening the club’s financial position, there is less urgency to cash in than there was earlier in the summer.
Botafogo are even said to be considering offering Danilo a new contract with improved terms and a higher release clause should no suitable proposal arrive.
Whether that ultimately becomes necessary may depend on Newcastle. The Magpies have repeatedly appeared in Brazilian reports throughout this transfer window, but are still waiting to discover whether Bruno Guimarães’ future will force them back into the market.
If it does, Danilo seems to be one of the names refusing to disappear from the conversation.
