Atletico Madrid may have reignited their interest in Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero as they hunt for a centre-back.
SER Deportivo report that the Tottenham defender is the wishlist of manager Diego Simeone, who is now planning for life without José María Giménez.
Tottenham Star Wanted

The Spanish outlet report that the ‘big priority’ at Atletico at this moment in time is the signing of a new centre-back. That’s because Giménez is no longer in the plans and they want him to leave.
Simeone has already made his desire known. He wants to sign Cristian Romero, who is expected to leave Tottenham this summer. That’s opened the possibility of the Spanish side reigniting their interest in the 28-year-old.
There is no mention if a move has been made at this point. But there is every chance that Atletico have become aware of Inter Milan’s growing efforts for the Tottenham centre-back.
The Italian side have been negotiating with Romero and Tottenham for weeks to find a deal that suits all parties. Reports in Italy now suggest they are close to finalising a €40m deal for the defender. That is a price that would presumably interest Atletico.
Interest Reignited
Indeed, we would not be surprised if Atletico have become aware of that asking price and reignited their interest because of it.
Reports linked Atletico with a move for Cristian Romero throughout the summer transfer window. At one point, it appeared destined to happen.
Indeed, a report last year stated that Romero had been talking to Atletico about a deal since November 2024. The interest is a longstanding one, to say the least.
Now the Argentine appears to be leaving Tottenham and could be available for a price they consider fair, the interest has ramped up once again. For now, it’s just a suggestion, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this particular rumour pick up speed once again.
