Tottenham have done what Manchester City wanted and put £85m (€98m) on the table for Savinho. That, however, still hasn’t been enough to get the transfer done.
Brazil’s Globo Esporte report Spurs have now submitted a formal offer for the winger. The £85m (€98m) proposal reaches the figure City wanted at the beginning of negotiations.
City are nevertheless playing hardball, and Savinho isn’t particularly happy about it.
The 22-year-old didn’t train under Enzo Maresca on Thursday, as told by the British press. Globo Esporte directly link his absence to his determination to join Tottenham. And that creates something of a stand-off at the Etihad.
Tottenham deliver
Savinho and Tottenham are now waiting for Manchester City to give the deal the green light.
The latest development also backs up what ESPN Brazil’s Bruno Andrade reported earlier this week. He said Spurs were “in a hurry” to complete the transfer and would reach City’s financial demands. Andrade expected the eventual deal to comfortably exceed £70m (€81m).
Tottenham have now gone considerably further. The awkward part for City is that £85m (€98m) was more than what they wanted in the first place.
Globo Esporte say they are now making things difficult despite receiving that proposal, while Savinho has decided he wants the transfer.
Man City hesitate
Maresca praised the winger during pre-season, but that hasn’t changed his mind. Savinho believes he will have a bigger role and more regular minutes at Tottenham. Only 14 of his 36 appearances over the past year were starts, and that lack of continuity has weighed heavily on his decision.
He also sees regular Premier League football as important for getting himself back into Brazil’s plans at the start of a new World Cup cycle.
For now, though, the transfer is stuck. Globo Esporte expect this stand-off to continue over the next few days, although there is optimism it won’t drag all the way to the September 1st deadline.
Tottenham have produced the offer. Savinho is pushing for the move. Manchester City now have to decide whether £85m (€98m) really is enough after all.
