VfB Stuttgart Board Member for Sport Fabian Wohlgemuth admits Chema Andrés’ move to Brighton and Hove Albion on deadline day left them disappointed.

Brighton move
Chema left the German club this week after just a year. The 21-year-old has moved to Brighton in a €23m deal, with them bringing him in late to replace Carlos Baleba.
The deal brought an end to a short stint with the German club, where he quickly impressed and established himself as a key player. And Wohlgemuth admits they would have preferred it not to happen.
He says the deal was done “on short notice”. Stutgart only agreed to it because the player very much wanted the switch.
“From a sporting perspective, we would have liked to keep Chema,” he said.
“However, this was weighed against the player’s desire to move. We tied the transfer to specific financial conditions, which were met, so we ultimately agreed to the move.”
Real Madrid profits
The deal taking Chema to Brighton was perhaps more frustrating for Stuttgart given they only received half of the transfer fee.
Sport Witness covered reports yesterday explaining that Real Madrid had received 50% of the deal for their former youth player. They were celebrating the latest addition to their revenue having sold several youth products this summer for massive gains.
Chema was the latest on that list, and the latest in a growing trend for the Spanish giants. They’ve become masters at selling youngsters and retaining clauses to ensure they benefit down the line.
The midfielder is their latest success story and, perhaps, seen as a failure as far as Stuttgart are concerned. It seems they were certainly not happy to be selling, even though the finances were right for them in some form.
